  1. Salute to Women Awards
    The Alexandria Commission for Women is seeking nominations for the 32nd Annual Salute to Women Awards. These 10 awards, which recognize women, men and youth who have made a significant impact on women in Alexandria, will be presented at a banquet, Monday, March 26 at The Westin Alexandria. The previous February 24 deadline to nominate has been extended to March 1 at 5 p.m.
  2. Public Hearing on City's Strategic Plan on Aging
    Senior citizens are the fastest growing age group in Alexandria; between the year 2000 and 2030, the population of persons ages 60+ population will double. The City has developed a strategic plan to support the ability of older Alexandrians to stay in the city and contribute to its vitality. The plan will be discussed at a public hearing at City Hall on Saturday, February 25 at 9:30 am.
  3. Town Hall Meeting - Beauregard Draft Plan on Housing
    The City of Alexandria’s Affordable Housing Advisory Committee (AHAC) invites the public to attend a Housing Town Hall to learn more about the Draft Plan for Housing in Beauregard. The Town Hall will be held on Thursday, February 23 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the William Ramsay Recreation Center Multipurpose Room, 5650 Sanger Ave.
  4. Alexandria Honors Paramedic Joshua A. Weissman
    A funeral service with honors was held Thursday for fallen Alexandria Paramedic Joshua Weissman. Paramedic Weissman died in the line of duty after falling from a roadway and suffering a fatal head injury while responding to a car fire on I-395. Please direct all inquiries to 703.746.HELP.
  5. City Manager Proposes $585.6 Million General Fund Operating Budget for Fiscal Year 2013
    On February 14, City Manager Rashad Young presented his proposed $585.6 Million General Fund Operating Budget for Fiscal Year 2013 to City Council. The proposed budget, which includes no tax rate increases of any kind, maintains core services (education, public safety, public infrastructure and transportation) without making major reductions in other service areas.

    This spring, join a "Community Read" of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind: Creating Currents of Electricity & Hope, an inspiring tale of how author William Kamkwamba achieved his dream of bringing electricity, light, and the promise of a better life to his family and his village. The event will culminate on March 23, when Mr. Kamkwamba visits Alexandria to share the experiences that led him to write this book.

  11. Mayor Euille Today
    In the latest edition of Mayor Euille Today, Alexandria Mayor William D. Euille speaks with Fire Chief Adam Thiel about new fire truck staffing that will improve public safety; and with Christina Gutierrez from the TC Williams Ben Carson Reading Room, and TC students Samuel Davies, and DeAra Brown about the new reading room and the importance of reading.
  12. Vendor Cart Applications Being Accepted for 2012

    Any business that is interested in applying to participate in the food and beverage vendor cart program at Market Square may now apply by February 15, 2012. A pilot program was launched last year, and is being continued in 2012. In addition to submitting an application, vendors must purchase their own carts after design and health department approval by the City.

  13. Waterfront Small Area Plan Approved
    The Alexandria City Council voted 5-2 to approve the Waterfront Small Area Plan. The Plan provides a framework for revitalizing Alexandria’s waterfront through several means, including: incorporating Alexandria’s history as a foundation for planning and design, expanding and enhancing public open spaces, improving public access and connectivity, promoting the waterfront as an arts and cultural destination, ensuring compatible development.
