ABOUT NOTICe ...

Purpose: NOTICe is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion, protection, and preservation of North Old Town.. NOTICe seeks to educate Alexandria City residents, especially those residing in North Old Town, about issues that bear on their interests, welfare and common good. Also, NOTICe distributes information, maintains a web site and contributes to other organizations that qualify as exempt organizations under section 501 C (3) of the Internal Revenue Code, or corresponding section of any future federal tax code.

Brief History :The name of the organization, NOTICe, was proposed by North Old Town residents during an organizational meeting on April 11, 1999. NOTICe derives its name from the North Old Town Independent Citizens Civic Association. Its jurisdiction is within the borders of Oronoco Street on the South, Dangerfield Island on the North, Washington Street on the West and the Potomac River on the East.The first membership meeting was held on June 8, 1999, by a provisionary board of directors. The original draft of the Bylaws was adopted unanimously by the dues paying membership on November 3, 1999, and official board members were approved unanimously. The current draft of the Bylaws was adopted unanimously by the membership on June 14, 2001 -- wherein the abbreviation for its name was changed to NOTICe. Application for 501-C3 non-profit status was originally submitted in January 7, 2002. NOTICe is incorporated in the state of Virginia.

NOTICe has played an integral part in reducing the property tax rate, Improving the quality of the air by demanding stricter emission controls on the Potomac River Generation Station otherwise known as the Mirant Plant, acting on zoning and land use issues. It has distributed and forwarded petitions to government officials, testified at Planning Commission hearings, City Council meetings, Virginia Department of Environmental Quality hearings, Council of Government meetings. NOTICe has hosted Candidates' forums to allow the citizens to interact with the Candidates for public office in the city of Alexandria. It has presented its views to every level of government and has organized rallies and marches. It has hosted a winter social event because it believes that fun plays an important role in its activities. It has been the active voice of the citizens of North old Town on the issues that contribute to its citizens' quality of life.
